<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><!DOCTYPE article  PUBLIC '-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.4//EN'  'http://www.docbook.org/xml/4.4/docbookx.dtd'><article><articleinfo><title>WikiWikiWeb</title></articleinfo><para>The <ulink url="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?FrontPage#">first ever wiki site</ulink> was created on the 25th of March, 1995 as an automated supplement to the <ulink url="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?PortlandPatternRepository#">PortlandPatternRepository</ulink> (see <ulink url="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?History#">History</ulink>). The site was immediately popular within the pattern community, largely due to the newness of the internet and a good slate of <ulink url="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?InvitedAuthors#">InvitedAuthors</ulink>. The site was, and remains, dedicated to <ulink url="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?PeopleProjectsAndPatterns#">PeopleProjectsAndPatterns</ulink>.  </para><para><ulink url="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WardCunningham#">WardCunningham</ulink> created the site and his WikiWikiWeb machinery that operates it. He chose wiki-wiki as an alliterative substitute for quick and thereby avoided naming this site quick-web. An early page, <ulink url="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiWikiHyperCard#">WikiWikiHyperCard</ulink>, traces wiki ideas back to a <ulink url="http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?HyperCard#">HyperCard</ulink> stack he wrote in the late 80's.  </para><para>The term <emphasis>wiki</emphasis> that is used to refer to other similar groups of modifiable web pages, like this here, came from that original wiki.
